The 3.5m-tall "Shugyo Daishi Statue" at Jizoji Temple

Jizo-ji Temple is said to have started in 1573 (Tensho 1), when the local lord Ichimura Denshiro built a Jizo hall. In Tensho 3, the temple was founded by inviting the priest Kyoiwa from Chogen-ji Temple (Yokosuka, Tokai City). The adjacent Nagakusa Tenjin Shrine was located on the same premises until the end of the Edo period, but the premises were separated due to the Shinbutsu Bunri Rei (law to separate Shinto and Buddhism). The principal image is the Enmei Jizo Bodhisattva, said to have been made by Prince Shotoku. In the temple grounds, a huge 3.5m-tall "Shugyo Daishi Statue" stands on a pedestal made of Shikoku's unique turtle stone. This gigantic statue was erected in 1939 (Showa 14) to commemorate the 2,600th anniversary of the founding of the Japanese Empire.
