We went to Queenstown with the kids because of its reputation as the "Garden of the World," but it turns out this garden is for adults to enjoy. For kids, it's full of "not suitable for children" extreme challenges! Planning a family trip? Read my painful experience first! A rundown of those "not kid-friendly" must-try activities: 🚡 Skyline Gondola: The gondola itself is fine. But the luge on top is strictly for kids 6 years and older and taller than 110cm, and helmets are mandatory. My 5-year-old watched longingly but couldn’t play, which led to a meltdown. It’s windy up there, and the viewing platform has gaps in the railing, so you have to keep a close eye on the kids. 🚢 TSS Steamboat + Farm: The boat is an old classic and quite interesting. But the farm activities have fixed times and last nearly 4 hours, which is torture for little ones who don’t nap regularly. The sheep-shearing show is indoors and dimly lit, which can scare some kids. 🐎 Glenorchy Horse Riding / Lord of the Rings Tour: Horse riding has strict age and weight limits (usually 8+ years). The jet boat ride is more thrilling, but kids are too scared to go. The so-called "Lord of the Rings town" is just ordinary scenery for kids who haven’t seen the movies. 🦌 Queenstown Deer Park: Requires booking well in advance, limited to 80 cars per day. You can’t get out of the car inside, animals are far away, and kids get bored quickly. Not cost-effective. 🪂 Other extreme activities: Skydiving, bungee jumping, giant swing... just watch from afar, none are suitable for young kids. What else can you do with kids in Queenstown? The regret of a rushed glance (pitfalls to avoid): Tiring itinerary: Nearly 5 hours of driving round trip from Auckland, only 1 hour to visit, most of the time spent on the road, kids get very tired. No deep experience: Fixed tour times mean you can't linger in your favorite spots or explore the surroundings. Missing out on pastoral scenery: The Waitomo area itself feels like the Hobbiton homeland, with pastures, hills, and streams—picturesque landscapes missed when rushing.
