In the 16th century, Trujillo experienced an era of glory due to its important role in the discovery of America. The city was the home of two great conquistadors: Francisco de Pizarro and Francisco de Orellana, the discoverers of Peru. Other luminaries were also born in Trujillo, such as Fray Jerónimo de Loiza, the first bishop of Cartagena, and Nuflo de Chavez, the discoverer of Bolivia.
