Spain Westward Journey ~ Cáceres (Region) An Arab tower, roughly square in plan. After Ferdinand II of León reconquered Cáceres in 1169, a family member founded the Council of Cáceres in the city, which later became known as the Order of Santiago. The tower takes its name from the Caliph Abu Ya'qub, whose troops conquered the city in 1173. In the 17th and 18th centuries it was known as the Belfry. Now open to the public.
