A church that was built by merging two churches from different centuries

When we talk about Salamanca Cathedral, we actually mean two churches connected together. First there was the old cathedral from the 12th-13th centuries; then the new one from the 16th century. The old cathedral is in Romanesque style and has an outstanding Gallo tower. This temple, which was built at the end of the 12th century, houses the Chapel of St. Martin or the Oil. The major repaintings, dating from the 15th century by several painters, led by Dello Delli, are also noteworthy. The frescoes covering the vault are the work of Nicolás Florentino. In this great painting we can see an image of Christ at the Last Judgment. The old cathedral attracts the attention of tourists because of the beautiful tombs of bishops and members of the nobility that are located inside. The new cathedral was built in the 16th century and completed by Churriguera in the 18th century, and houses a statue of the Assumption of the Virgin sculpted in 1624 by the sculptor Esteban de Rueda. In the new cathedral, the choir stalls designed by Joaquín Churriguera in 1727 are particularly noteworthy.
