A fortress on the border between Portugal and Spain

Spain Westward ~ Salamanca (Region) The village's historical condition as a border fortress between Portugal and Castile (and later Spain) has given it its unique urban layout today. Its Old Town is designated as a cultural attraction. The enclosure, of medieval origin, was protected by castles and ramparts built in successive periods. Built of stone with square towers beside, the walls date back to the 13th century and surround a wide rampart. The castle dates back to the 15th century and the third fortification with bastion walls dates from the 17th century. Within the walls, it is worth noting the parish church (12th-13th centuries), of transitional Romanesque style (facade and bell tower), transformed in Gothic-Renaissance style (16th century), with three naves and a main nave. Highlights of its civil architecture are buildings such as the Town Hall (16th century) and the Alhóndiga, the former hospitals of Rocamadour and La Misericordia, and various noble houses with carved coats of arms (16th to 18th centuries), such as the houses known as Los Mayorazgos, El Corregidor and Los señores de Ron. #2024TravelReview #SpainTravel #Castile-León
