Every year at this time, I went to the Azalea Festival, which is held at Okura Park in Obu City, Aichi Prefecture! Okura Park was built in the early Taisho period as a villa for Kazuchika Okura, and there are an astounding 2,800 azaleas planted in the park! To get to the venue, you first walk up the hill from the event space while admiring the azaleas. Then you come to the entrance to a magnificent park with a thatched roof. There is an azalea corridor in the park, and as you walk around the park admiring the azaleas, you will come across a gazebo that gives a sense of its past as a villa, a bamboo forest called the Okura Bamboo Forest Path, and a look inside the bomb shelter that Okura Kazuchika likely used. During the Azalea Festival, there are a lot of stalls and food trucks, and singing and dancing events are held on the stage, so many people come to enjoy the events and the beautifully blooming azaleas.
