Hong Kong Museum of Art's new exhibition takes visitors into the colorful world of Chinese cultural relics

The Hong Kong Museum of Art will hold the "#SEEING──The Aesthetics of Color in the Museum's Collection" exhibition from November 5th. With color as the theme, the exhibition will display more than 300 carefully selected Chinese cultural relics, allowing the audience to enter the colorful world of ancient cultural relics. Cultural relics are utensils used by ancient people in their daily lives. They are exquisitely designed, and their colors and patterns are not inferior to those used today. The design of cultural relics not only reflects the personal taste of the users, but also their religious beliefs and rules and rituals. In ancient China, colors were classified into five categories: blue, red, yellow, white, and black, which were called the "five primary colors." The exhibition features a wide variety of exhibits, including ceramics, lacquerware, silk fabrics, glass, jade, etc. Five historical figures - Qin Shi Huang, Song Huizong, Ming Dynasty Yongle Emperor, Qing Dynasty Qianlong Emperor and Minister Lang Tingji - are used as representatives of the five colors to introduce how they influenced the colors of contemporary objects. The Hong Kong Museum of Art has also selected modern art works from its collection for parallel exhibition, allowing colour to connect the past and present. Zhong Qiwei, a member of the Min Qiu Jingshe and collector, generously donated more than 100 Chinese cultural relics, mainly monochrome glazed porcelain, to the Hong Kong Museum of Art, of which more than 80 are on display in this exhibition. To complement the exhibition, the art museum invited local artist and illustrator Lee Mei-yan (also known as Messy Desk) to create an illustration about the color journey of Chinese cultural relics. The two young illustration protagonists will lead the audience on a journey to find colors and explore the various color materials of cultural relics. Li Meixin even transformed the museum’s third-floor lobby into the Messy Desk city. Through the characters she created especially for this exhibition, she allowed the audience to feel like they were flying over Victoria Harbour and travelling through time and space, and entering the colorful world of Chinese cultural relics. The exhibition will be held from November 5 to March 30 next year in the Chinese Cultural Relics Hall on the third floor of the Hong Kong Museum of Art, 10 Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon.
