Hong Kong Science Museum's new exhibition showcases China's polar research achievements

The Hong Kong Science Museum launched a new special exhibition "Polar Research and Climate Change" (March 18), showcasing the mission and scientific research results of China's polar research icebreaker "Xuelong 2", inspiring visitors to think about the seriousness of climate change. Admission to the exhibition is free and the public is welcome to visit. "Xuelong 2" is China's first independently built medium-sized icebreaker and the world's first to use bow and stern bidirectional icebreaking technology. It was delivered in 2019. The commissioning of Xuelong 2 has enabled China to take the lead in organizing large-scale polar expeditions and enhance the depth of China's polar marine environmental surveys and scientific research. This exhibition is designed based on the "Xuelong 2", allowing visitors to feel as if they are in the cabin and understand the progress of China's polar scientific research. A large screen is set up inside the ship to play videos of breaking ice in the polar regions, bringing an immersive experience to visitors. Highlight exhibits include a 1:100 scale model of the Xuelong 2 and biological specimens collected in the polar regions. In addition to introducing the characteristics and research topics of China's various polar scientific research stations, the exhibition also provides information on the geography, biology and even climate change of the Antarctic and Arctic. Through the exhibition, citizens can deepen their understanding of polar scientific research and reflect on how to reduce carbon footprint in their daily lives and respond to the challenges of climate change. The crew and scientific researchers of Xuelong 2 will visit Hong Kong next month and attend a dialogue and exchange activity with Hong Kong students at the Hong Kong Science Museum on April 10 to share their insights and experiences in polar scientific research. The Hong Kong Science Museum will broadcast the event live on its YouTube channel. The exhibition is co-organised by the Environmental Campaign Committee and the Green Future Foundation, funded by the Environment and Conservation Fund, co-organised by the Environment and Ecology Bureau, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Hong Kong Polar Research Centre, and organised by the Hong Kong Science Museum.
