A Stroll Through Spanish Fishing Ports: Exploring Local Culture

Pilgrimage Along Spain's Atlantic Coast ~ The Basque Region Ondarroa is a fishing and canning port. Its main highlights include the Church of Santa María and the Likona Tower perched atop the town. To the east of Ondarroa, Saturraran Beach marks the boundary between the Biscay Coast and the Gipuzkoa Coast. The old town is one of the most picturesque spots here, characterized by its distinct medieval and maritime atmosphere, with steep and narrow streets. Here, you can find the 15th-century Likona Tower, a typical border structure. Nearby stands the magnificent Church of Santa María, built on a rocky outcrop in 1462. The old town hall is also worth a visit, featuring a Tuscan-style façade that contrasts sharply with the other buildings in the town. Climbing a rather steep hill, you will reach the Church of Our Lady of Antigua. From this elevated vantage point, you can enjoy breathtaking, colorful, and majestic views. The church was originally built in the 12th century and was rebuilt in 1750. On the way to the Church of Our Lady of Antigua, you will also come across two beautiful hermitages: the Hermitage of San Juan and the Hermitage of Santa Clara, both accessible only on foot.
