Passau, Germany, the city of three rivers

Passau is a city in Lower Bavaria, Germany with a long history of more than 2,000 years. It is also known as the "City of Three Rivers" because the Inn River from the south and the Ilz River and Danube River from the north meet here. Now this city is one of the ports of call for Danube cruises. In this city, I have tasted my favorite food among the more than 100 cities I have visited in Germany. It is also one of the most beautiful cities in Germany in my mind. Passau has a population of approximately 50,000 people, of whom approximately 12,000 are students at the University of Passau, which is well known in Germany for its economics, law, theology, computer science, and cultural research institutes. Many of the Boyi tribes were driven northwards over the Alps from northern Italy by the Romans in the 2nd century BC. They established a new capital, which the Romans from Gaul called Boiodurum, which is now the center of Passau on the south bank of the Inn River where three rivers meet. In the second half of the 5th century, the Christian saint Saint Severinus of Noricum established a monastery here, but it was often attacked by the Alemanni. In 739, the English Benedictine Archbishop St. Boniface founded the Diocese of Passau, which for many years was the largest diocese in the Holy Roman Empire, covering southern Bavaria and most of what is now Upper and Lower Austria. During the Renaissance and the Early Modern period, Passau was one of the most prolific sword and blade manufacturing centers in Germany, second only to Solingen. Passau blacksmiths engraved the Passau Wolf on their blades, usually a rather simplified rendering of the wolf on the city coat of arms. Superstitious warriors believed that the Passau Wolf granted the wielder of the sword invulnerability, so the Passau sword acquired great honor. Passau was secularized in 1803 and divided between the Electorates of Bavaria and Salzburg. The part that belonged to Salzburg became part of Bavaria in 1805. From 1892 to 1894, Adolf Hitler and his family lived in Passau. City archives mention that Hitler gave speeches in Passau four times in the 1920s. In addition, SS chief Heinrich Himmler spent some time there. #GreenTourism #GermanyTravel #EuropeTravel #ExploreEuropeanSmallTowns #BlueDanube #OverseasTravel #WhiteChurch #deutschland #bavaria #passau
