Alpine town ~ Fussen, Germany

Füssen is a small town in the Osthard district of Bavaria, Germany. It is one kilometer away from the Austrian border and is the closest transportation hub to Neuschwanstein Castle and Hohenschwangau Castle. This is also the main reason why people are familiar with this town today. The Via Claudia Augusta is an ancient Roman road that connected the Po River with the ancient Roman province of Raetia across the Alps, covering modern eastern Switzerland, northern Italy, western Austria, southern Germany, and parts of Liechtenstein, including Füssen. In the late Roman Empire, Fussen was one of the locations of the Roman Third Legion, whose main purpose was to guard the important trade routes in the Alps. Füssen later became the site of the High Castle, the summer residence of the Prince-Bishops of Augsburg. Below the High Castle are the Baroque complex of the former Benedictine Abbey of St. Mans, dating back to the 9th century. Magnus of Fussen, the founder of the Abbey of St. Mang (Figure 1-2), is the patron saint of Fussen.
