former portuguese territory

Traveling westward in Spain ~ Badajoz Province (region) Olivenza was founded by the Knights Templar in the 13th century. Today, the town still retains its Portuguese heritage. Overall, its architecture is a fusion of styles from both countries, and its monumental heritage is quite rich. This historic district is surrounded by city walls and has a total of fourteen towers. In 1334, construction work began on the fortress within the walls. But the tallest tower on the border was built in 1488 and is thirty-seven meters high. In the King's Bakery inside the fortress, which dates from the 18th century, we can find the Ethnographic Museum. The Magdalena Church, built in the 16th century, is a true masterpiece of the Manueline style. Located on the Portuguese border, Olivenza built many forts and bastions, as well as many other defensive structures, such as the Santa Barbara Arsenal, watchtowers next to the city gates, and military barracks. Olivenza belonged to Portugal until 1801 under the terms of the Treaty of Alcanese in 1297. #2024TravelReview #SpainTravel #Extremadura
