Matsuyama Castle – Experience the Living History of Ehime Prefecture

1. Overview & Location • Matsuyama Castle was built in 1603 by Kato Yoshiaki as a Hirayama-style castle. It is located atop Katsuyama Mountain at an elevation of 132 meters and is one of the 12 original castle keeps still preserved in Japan. • You can reach the castle in about 20 minutes from JR Matsuyama Station by taking a tram and then a cable car or lift. 2. Getting to the Castle • Tram + Cable Car/Lift: Get off at Okaido Station and take the cable car or lift. • On foot: Walk from Shiroyama Park or the Ninomaru Historical Garden at the base of the castle for about 15 minutes. The route is especially beautiful during spring when cherry blossoms are in bloom. 3. Castle Keep & Structure • The main structures include the castle keep, six yagura (guard towers), numerous gates, and stone walls, all of which are well-preserved. • The original castle keep was struck by lightning and destroyed in 1784. The current structure was rebuilt between 1852 and 1854. • Inside, there are exhibition rooms showcasing weapons, haiku poetry, and traditional architectural techniques. 4. History and Nature at Every Step • The stone steps and winding paths evoke a sense of traveling back in time, while the castle's stone walls feature intricate designs with symbolic meanings. • During spring, the Shiroyama Park Cherry Blossom Festival takes place, and the castle is illuminated at night, creating a romantic atmosphere. • Throughout the year, visitors can enjoy seasonal scenery with plum blossoms, cherry blossoms, and autumn foliage. In spring, the subtle fragrance of the blossoms adds to the experience. 5. Castle Keep Admission & Tips for Visiting • Admission to the castle keep is approximately 520 yen for adults and 160 yen for children. • Visitors must remove their shoes and wear slippers inside. The stairs inside are quite steep, so caution is advised. • English information boards are available, along with explanations of exhibits and architectural features. It’s recommended to take care of water and restroom needs outside the main building.
