Waterfront Wonder✨

📰 Travel Journal: A Walk Along Kuching Waterfront The Kuching Waterfront, stretching about 900 meters along the southern bank of the Sarawak River, is one of the most vibrant and scenic attractions in the city. Once a busy river port during the Brooke era in the 19th century, this area has been beautifully transformed into a well-planned public esplanade that blends history, culture, and leisure. I started my walk from the Square Tower, a white colonial-era structure that once served as a fortress and later a prison. Today, it stands as a historical marker and an excellent starting point for exploring the waterfront. From there, the paved walkway unfolds gracefully, lined with shady trees, fountains, and art installations. What makes the Kuching Waterfront stand out is how it captures the rhythm of local life. In the morning, joggers and early risers enjoy the cool air by the river. By late afternoon, the promenade becomes lively — families, street vendors, and performers create a relaxed yet festive atmosphere. Across the river, the impressive Dewan Undangan Negeri (State Legislative Assembly) building dominates the skyline with its golden, umbrella-shaped roof — a modern architectural icon of Sarawak. The Darul Hana Bridge, completed in 2017, connects both sides of the city, offering panoramic views of the river and old Kuching. Walking across it during sunset is a highlight — the bridge lights up in vibrant colors, reflecting beautifully on the calm waters below. Food is another essential part of the waterfront experience. Hawkers sell local favorites such as Sarawak Laksa, mee kolok, and satay, while nearby cafés offer a more relaxed dining experience with open-air views of the river. A short stroll away, historical landmarks like Fort Margherita and the Chinese History Museum offer insight into Kuching’s multicultural past. Together, they showcase the city’s evolution from a trading settlement to a thriving modern capital. In essence, the Kuching Waterfront is more than a scenic riverside park — it’s the heartbeat of the city. It brings together heritage, architecture, and daily life in a way that feels both timeless and welcoming. Whether you come to photograph the skyline, enjoy local food, or simply sit and watch the boats drift by, the waterfront promises a memorable glimpse into Kuching’s soul.
