Xiqu Centre (English: Xiqu Centre), also known as the "Eastern Gate of West Kowloon", is an opera performance venue in Hong Kong, located at the junction of Canton Road and Austin Road West in the West Kowloon Cultural District, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon. The Xiqu Centre is the first project completed in the West Kowloon Cultural District, covering an area of ​​13,800 square meters. Construction began on September 24, 2013 and was completed in 2018 at a cost of HK$2.7 billion. It officially opened on January 20, 2019. The main body of the building is based on the concept of a lantern. The egg-shaped theater is located on the top floor of the opera center and adopts the traditional Chinese moon arch pattern to create its smooth exterior wall shape. There are two theaters that can accommodate 1,100 and 400 people respectively, a tea house that can accommodate 280 people, and a sky garden with a view of Victoria Harbour. As the theatre is located on an elevated platform, in response to public consultation, the spacious atrium in the underground floor will be vacated to serve as an arts education centre, public leisure space, retail and catering facilities, etc., with an area of ​​2,000 square metres. It invites top theatre troupes from Hong Kong, the Mainland and other places to perform large-scale classic plays, rare local operas and new contemporary creations, from master artists to potential newcomers. Designed by Revery Architecture (formerly Ping Wing Tam Architects) and Ronald Lu & Co., the Xiqu Centre is based on the concept of a traditional Chinese lantern, blending traditional and modern elements. The streamlined exterior and semi-open atrium space embody the concept of "chi", presenting a new image of Xiqu that is full of modernity. The Xiqu Centre attaches great importance to sustainable development, and energy conservation is achieved in both architectural design and details of various engineering projects.
