UNESCO Global Geopark - East Dam of High Island Reservoir

Hong Kong is a densely populated city, but it also has many natural landscapes! Many of these places (as shown on the map) are even listed as UNESCO World Geoparks! And the East Dam of the Qiaoyi Reservoir is one of them! The High Island Reservoir is located in Sai Kung East Country Park and has beautiful scenery. The section on its south bank is the first section of the famous hiking trail, the MacLehose Trail, and is a popular hiking destination. The cliffs near the East Dam of the reservoir were once a quarry opened up during the construction of the reservoir. After the excavation, the cliffs were exposed to reveal hexagonal rock columns of rhyolitic volcanic rocks that are rare in the world, making it the best place in Hong Kong to view this geological wonder up close.
