A unique landscape that has evolved over 100 million years

The High Island Reservoir in Sai Kung's Tung Kung Park is divided into two dams, the East Dam and the West Dam. The East Dam of the High Island Reservoir has a higher appreciation value and is a popular hiking and picnic destination. The cliff near the east dam of the reservoir used to be a stone quarry. After excavation, rare hexagonal columns of rhyolitic volcanic rocks were exposed. The Early Cretaceous rhyolitic column group was selected as one of the first 100 IUGS geological heritage sites in 2022, becoming one of the 100 most geologically valuable places in the world recognized by the scientific community.
