Hong Kong Museum of Art's new exhibition immerses visitors in the emotional worlds of artists from past and present

The Hong Kong Museum of Art has launched a new exhibition, "Love Letters: Enduring Emotions Across Time and Space," showcasing 28 selected works from the museum's Xubaizhai Chinese calligraphy and painting collection. Using love letters as a starting point, this exhibition not only guides viewers through the subtle and profound emotions imbued in Chinese calligraphy and painting, but also transcends traditional display methods by inviting Hong Kong artist Tsang Kin-wah to create a site-specific projection installation, "Cold River: Between Here and There," immersing viewers in the emotional worlds of artists from past and present. "Love Letters: Enduring Emotions Across Time and Space" features works by masters such as Zhang Daqian, Dong Qichang, and Wen Zhengming. These works, like moving love letters, reveal the artists' emotions of love, family, teacher-student bonds, friendship, and national sentiment. Local artist Tsang Kin-wah initially employed oil paint and silkscreen to create text and pattern installations, but later transitioned to digital projection. In recent years, he has specialized in integrating sound effects and projection installations with spatial design to connect with the audience through his works. Inspired by the emotions expressed in ancient Chinese painting and calligraphy, Tsang Kin-wah has created a large-scale video projection installation, "Cold River—Between Here and There." Drawing on the layout of Chinese landscape paintings depicting the banks of a river, the work integrates concepts from religion, literature, and film, along with Tsang Kin-wah's own experiences. Using contrasting black-and-white images and high and low-pitched sound effects, the work leads viewers on a journey through the ebb and flow of their inner emotions. The first phase of the "Love Letters" exhibition and Tsang Kin-wah's installation are currently on display at the Xubaizhai Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Gallery, 2/F, Hong Kong Museum of Art, 10 Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, until August 10.
