Ehingen, a small town in Baden-Württemberg, Germany

Ehingen is a town in the Alb-Donau district of the German state of Baden-Württemberg, located on the left bank of the Danube. The city and the entire Ehingen district have been part of the French occupation zone since 1945, initially belonging to the postwar state of Württemberg-Hohenzollern, and in 1952 to the South Württemberg-Hohenzollern administrative district of the new state of Baden-Württemberg. The earliest written mention of Ehingen is in 961, when the name "Eh'gna" was first mentioned in a document. The town flourished in the 12th and 13th centuries under the rule of the Counts of Berg-Scherklingen. Today, Berg is just the name of a village south of Ehingen. In 1343, Count Conrad sold his lands to the Austrian branch of the Habsburgs, who in turn gave them to Conrad. After Count Conrad died in 1346 without an heir, Ehingen became part of the early Habsburg dynasty and was eventually administered as part of the Günzburg district together with the Habsburg part of the former Burgau. In 1805, the Treaty of Pressburg placed Ehingen under the rule of the new Kingdom of Württemberg. In 1688 and 1749, large parts of the town were destroyed by fire.
