Century-old buildings awaiting revitalization and reuse

Spain Westward Journey ~ Cáceres (Region) The first document recording the existence of this house dates back to 1401, although the current building was built in the first half of the 17th century by Frey Don Juan Roco Campofrío. On January 17, 1213, Alfonso IX of León finally conquered Alcántara from the Muslims, with Bernardo Rocco being a key protagonist of the battle, and he was recognized with the Rancho de Campofrio. The building was used as a general hospital during the War of Succession and later as a military barracks. It was destroyed in 1809 and later rebuilt to house veterans of the Revolutionary War. The granite ashlar facade consists of three levels in which balance and symmetry prevail thanks to the regular arrangement of its openings. The windows on the first and second floors are decorated with triangular pediments. In the centre, the solid doorway opens to a lower door framed by Tuscan columns, while the balcony is completed by a split pediment supported by Ionic columns, adding a certain dynamism to the whole. It is currently the largest civilian building in Alcántara. #2024TravelReview #SpainTravel #Extremadura
