2025 Sendai Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in October)

From Sendai, the gateway to Tohoku, to Fukushima, a city brimming with natural charm and locals, we stopped at Yamagata, a land of mountains and hot springs. Especially in winter, the snow is beautiful all along the way. Finally, we ended our trip in Akita, a quiet city surrounded by mountains and a deep culture. This was a truly romantic and fulfilling journey, filled with fluffy snow and a sense of well-being. So, what did our 5-day, 4-night itinerary look like? Let's take a look!!! Day 1: On our first day from Sendai to Fukushima, we chose to stay near Higashiyama Onsen. We then continued to Inawashiro Lake, continuing on to Ouchi-Juku, a charming village. Nearby, we also found To-no Hetsuri, where we stayed at Niko Ryokan. Day 2: On the morning of the second day, we headed straight to the romantic train at Tadami Line Viewpoint. The view was stunning. We spent a lot of time there. Then we headed to Tsurugajo Castle. Day 3: On the third day, we traveled to Yamagata City to visit the Zao Ropeway at Zao Sanroku Station. Kaminoyama Castle is a must-see. For dessert, we recommend Yamagata Pudding Sweets & Cafe. Afterward, we visited the adorable Zao Fox Village. Our accommodation was the lovely Hotel Arimakan, and for dinner, we had a yakiniku restaurant, 笑福 (ショウフク). Day 4: On the fourth morning, we went to Ginzan Onsen, which we spent a lot of time at. We then continued on to Nakajoya Japanese Sweets Store, and for dinner, we had Sushi Manryu, a superb restaurant. Day 5: Finally, on the fifth day, we arrived in Akita City. Our first stop was Tazawa Lake, which had a stunning view. We then continued on to Uttou Onsen. Arriving in Akita City, we had to visit the Akita Dog Museum in Odaiba. Getting There: Sendai Station Must-See Attraction: Beef Tongue Street Recommended Restaurant: Sotetsu Inn Must-Try Foods: Beef Tongue, Edamame Shopping Guide: Sendai Station is surrounded by numerous department stores and shopping streets. There's a beef tongue street just upstairs from the station, with six restaurants in total, but due to time constraints, I only tried four. I tried the famous Rikyu and Zenjiro, and Date, who claims to be a Sendai native. My family recommended Kisuke, too. My personal ranking would be Date, Zenjiro, Kisuke, and Rikyu. Each has its own unique flavors and side dishes. It's definitely worth the visit and convenient.

The roof is built in the irimoya-zukuri style, with a front-facing chidori-hafu and a karahafu eave at the worship hall. I went to the Sendai Uminomori Aquarium in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture! It's an aquarium that can be enjoyed by both children and adults, with many experiences where you can interact with sea creatures🐬✨ The dolphin and sea lion performances are impressive! The huge tank is filled with tuna, turtles, and creatures from the Tohoku sea. In the interaction corner, we were able to touch starfish and sea cucumbers♪ [How to enjoy the aquarium] 1. Starting from Sendai, it takes only about 40 minutes to reach Matsushima, making it super convenient. Arriving in Matsushima in the morning, you can explore souvenir shops and enjoy experiences like grilled oysters and grilled fish cakes, along with plenty of delicious food. Here are some recommendations: - Visit "Kanrantei" to enjoy matcha tea while admiring the ocean view. - Take a Matsushima sightseeing cruise to appreciate the islands and sea views. - Choose from a variety of restaurants offering seafood, beef tongue, Italian cuisine, and cozy cafes. - For history and Japanese culture enthusiasts, visit Zuiganji Temple or Entsuin Temple. - Rent a kimono at "Ume Love" and take a leisurely stroll. From fresh seafood and seasonal fruits to freshly fried croquettes, this market has it all. I arrived a bit late, so I only tried two places. If you can wake up early, I recommend visiting around 8 AM and then heading to a nearby café afterward. 🐟 Kogane Seafood For fresh seafood, this is the place to go. You can choose your seafood and have it cooked on the spot. Items like oysters can be opened and eaten immediately—they're plump and flavorful with a strong taste of the sea. Miyagi Prefecture's tuna sashimi has evenly distributed fat and a delicate texture. The sweet shrimp was decent but not particularly impressive, though everything was fresh. I also ordered grilled scallops, which were satisfying when paired with soy sauce and shichimi powder available at the table. ✨ Saito Delicatessen Korokke-ya This specialty fried food shop is extremely popular. As you pass by, you'll catch the enticing aroma that makes it hard to resist buying one to eat on the spot. There's seating nearby for you to enjoy your food. First stop after arriving at Sendai Station was a hearty meal featuring a luxurious beef tongue bowl 🤩‼️ Thick slices of beef tongue piled high made for a satisfying meal 💯 📍 Gyutan Keyaki, Sendai Ichibancho Main Store It’s about a 15-minute walk from Sendai Station 🚶 Next, the accommodation for the night: 📍 Akiu Fuga Upon arrival, we were greeted with a stylish welcome drink 🍸. You can choose your favorite flavor from about three options. The room had the soothing scent of tatami mats, provided loungewear, and even original blended tea 🍵. This inn also offers private baths and saunas that you can reserve for exclusive use! For dinner, we opted for the lightest course, but it still ended with a steak that left us completely full‼️ And if that wasn’t enough, after dinner, the bar served parfaits for dessert and warm noodles as a late-night snack—a full-course experience 😋‼️ The satisfaction level was incredible 👍 Breakfast was equally impressive, featuring a comparison of different Miyagi-grown rice varieties and a hearty meal. Enjoying the rich cultural atmosphere of Tohoku University's campus, admiring the century-old red brick buildings and the blooming cherry blossoms—what a romantic spring experience! Tohoku University is Japan's third Imperial University, following the University of Tokyo and Kyoto University. Established in 1894, it boasts a long and storied history. The Katahira Campus of Tohoku University overlooks Aobayama and is situated near the ruins of Sendai Castle. The campus is home to cherry trees that, while not densely planted, are quite old and large. When the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, the sight is truly spectacular. Capturing cherry blossoms in the expansive campus setting offers a unique artistic vibe, reminiscent of Hokkaido University. Both campuses are perfect for taking stunning photos.

#Sendai Sakura Ishibashiya, a long-established candy store in Sendai, is a traditional Japanese townhouse located next to a tributary of the Hirose River. There is a stunningly beautiful weeping cherry tree with pink flowers that looks like a pink cherry blossom waterfall when it blooms. It is spectacular and beautiful, attracting passers-by to stop and watch. The best place to take pictures of Ishibashiya is from the street, where you can take pictures from the Funachobashi Bridge nearby, capturing both the weeping cherry trees and the riverbank. Whether you take pictures from a distance or up close, the pictures are very charming. The transportation to the place is not difficult. You can take the Sendai Metro Namboku Line directly to Kawaramachi Station. It is only 3 stops and 5 minutes from Sendai Station, and it is only a 5-minute walk from the station. This makes it one of Sendai's most famous cherry blossom viewing spots. Conveniently located near Renbō Station on the subway, it attracts many visitors during the cherry blossom season. The temple grounds offer different scenery throughout the year, featuring a variety of plants such as weeping cherry trees, Yoshino cherry trees, azaleas, dogwoods, and citrus trees. During the peak cherry blossom season, the temple enhances the experience by setting up red carpeted benches and illuminating the grounds at night. Adjacent Kinokashita Park is a large park that preserves the ruins of the Nara-period Mutsu Kokubunji. Though modest in size, it boasts numerous cherry trees in full bloom, making it a favorite spot for locals to take their children for a stroll and enjoy the blossoms. This area was once known as Shimizunuma, named by Date Masamune for its cool and clear waters. The swamp was originally much larger than the current park. Later, the high-quality spring water in the area led to the construction of the Kirin Beer factory. Today, it serves as a community park. The park features shaded areas, a man-made stream, and playground facilities, making it ideal for children to play. In spring, visitors can enjoy cherry blossoms, while autumn brings vibrant foliage and golden ginkgo leaves. It's a peaceful spot to visit during the day, with few crowds and a relaxing atmosphere.

Situated on a gentle hill overlooking the city, the park was once the site of an old military school and has also yielded archaeological finds from the early Jomon period. The park boasts over 750 cherry blossom trees, featuring 48 different varieties, making it the location with the most diverse cherry blossom species in Sendai.
