[Miyagi] Sendai Castle Ruins (Aoba Castle Ruins)

#0YenTravel2025Autumn Sendai Castle (Aoba Castle), the residence of the Date clan's 620,000 koku (approx. 130 meters above sea level). Built on a natural fortress surrounded by cliffs on the east and south, the castle is said to have deliberately not had a keep to avoid the vigilance of Shogun Ieyasu. Unfortunately, the castle itself has now disappeared, but only the stone walls and reconstructed side turrets evoke its former glory. From sunset to 11:00 PM, the stone walls and the statue of Date Masamune on horseback are illuminated, allowing visitors to enjoy the night view of the one-million-person city of Sendai. The castle ruins are now Aobayama Park, and the remains of the main citadel offer panoramic views of Sendai and the Pacific Ocean. A literary monument to Bansui Doi, a prominent figure in Sendai, is also located nearby. In the summer of 2003, it was designated a National Historic Site. In front of the bronze statue of Bansui Doi, an automated musical performance of "Kojo no Tsuki" plays every 30 minutes from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
