Wernigerode, Germany

Wernigerode is a town with a population of over 30,000 on the northern slope of the Harz Mountains in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The town is about 250 meters above sea level, 9.5 kilometers long from east to west and 6 kilometers from north to south. The highest point is the Brocken Peak, the highest peak in northern Germany and the Harz Mountains, with an altitude of 1,141 meters. Although the Harz Mountains are lower than the Alps, their microclimate is similar to that of mountains at 2,000 meters above sea level. The peak is covered with snow from September to May and is surrounded by fog for more than 300 days a year, making it an ideal destination for winter travel. The Brocken often appears in legends and is associated with witches and the devil. The great German writer Goethe introduced these stories into his tragedy "Faust" published in 1808.
