Wat Trapang Thonglang

The Chaturamuk Main Pavilion (Square Building with a Porch) Wat Trapang Thonglang lacks a main chedi. Instead, a square-shaped pavilion serves as the main structure, a characteristic of Sukhothai temples. The most remarkable stucco work depicting the life of the Buddha is a key feature of the temple, a reason why art historians highly value it. Three walls (except for the front entrance) are decorated with stucco relief depicting scenes from the life of the Buddha. This represents one of the most beautiful and complete examples of Sukhothai art from the Golden Age. Although somewhat damaged, its graceful and unique details remain. Southern Wall: The Buddha Descending from the Tavatimsa Heaven (Pang Lila). This well-known image depicts the Buddha in a graceful and walking pose, symbolizing the gracefulness and uniqueness of Sukhothai. Indra and Brahma follow him. A replica of this stucco work is currently on display at the Ramkhamhaeng National Museum. Northern Wall: The Buddha Torturing the Elephant Nalagiri It depicts the standing Buddha, accompanied by Ananda, and traces of the kneeling elephant Nalagiri. West Wall: The Buddha performs the Twin Miracle, depicting the miracle performed on his relatives in Kapilavastu. Art Historical Significance The stucco relief at Wat Trapang Thonglang dates from the mid-20th Buddhist century (during the reign of King Maha Thammaracha Lithai). It reflects the beliefs and inspirations behind the creation of art to propagate the life of the Buddha during the height of Sukhothai's prosperity.
