Wat Mahathat, Sukhothai

The main chedi is shaped like a lotus bud. This is the most distinctive architectural feature of Sukhothai art. This large main chedi sits at the center of the temple, surrounded by eight smaller chedis. Standing in front of this chedi truly captures the grandeur and prosperity of the Sukhothai period. Stucco relief of the walking disciples At the base of the main chedi, a bas-relief depicts disciples walking with their hands clasped (Anjuli) around a pedestal base. This image represents the gracefulness and uniqueness of Sukhothai art, which the Fine Arts Department has meticulously restored. Large walking Buddha image The pavilions flanking the main chedi once housed Phra Attharat, or large standing Buddha images (18 cubits high). Although only the base and walls of the viharn remain, the sacredness and devotion of the past remain. Over 200 smaller chedis Wat Mahathat is very spacious. It is filled with more than 200 small and large pagodas, which show the wealth of Buddhism of the kingdom.
