Originally built as a small wooden church, it has been rebuilt several times due to natural disasters and historical events. The church was extensively expanded in the mid-19th century, but was severely damaged in an earthquake in 1858. The church was rebuilt and consecrated in 1867. In 1925, the church suffered a bomb attack that destroyed much of the structure and killed more than 150 people. The church was rebuilt again between 1927 and 1933 and restored to its present appearance. The architecture of the Cathedral of Saint Nedelya is an example of Byzantine Revival style. The existing building was designed by the famous Bulgarian architectural team Vasilyov and Tsolov and features a grand central dome and multiple smaller domes that form a stunning skyline. The interior is decorated with beautiful frescoes and intricate wood carvings, reflecting the rich artistic tradition of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. The church also houses the holy relics of Serbian King Stefan Uroš II Milutin, adding to its historical and spiritual significance.
