Sofia is the capital and largest city of Bulgaria, one of the Balkan Peninsulas. Bulgaria is a country made up of Slavic peoples. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is very famous and is the largest Orthodox church in the Balkan Peninsula. It is named after Russian Tsar Alexander II. It was built between 1904 and 1912 in memory of the Russian soldiers who died helping Bulgaria break away from the Ottoman Empire.
