The desert, which covers around 22,900 sq kilometres, was once an essential landmark for caravans navigating between China and Central Asia. Our visit to Kumtag Desert in a late summer was an extraordinary. The weather was surprisingly pleasant during our hike, with warm but manageable temperatures. The golden dunes stretched endlessly, shimmering under the sun, creating a dramatic contrast against the blue sky. Hiking through the dunes was both challenging and rewarding. Each step sank slightly into the soft, warm sand, but the vast, untouched landscape gave us a profound sense of solitude and awe. The desert quiet beauty, with its ever shifting sand formations and undulating waves, left us mesmerised. The serenity and natural grandeur of Kumtag made this adventure one of the most memorable moments of our trip to Xinjiang.
