Flaming Mountains Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
The Flaming Mountains of China look UNREAL😍
A road trip to The Flaming Mountains, the hottest place in China where temperatures can reach over 80 degrees Celsius in the summer.
These mountains form the northern boundary of the Turpan Depression, making it the second or third lowest point on the planet. In the summer, when the waves of desert heat dance over the red stripes, it quite literally looks like flaming mountains!
Not only is this place interesting geographically, it is also where the famous movie "Journey to the West" was filmed. Many historians come here just to learn more about the ancient silk-road era.
It's definitely a very difficult place to reach, but the geography and landscapes are some of the most unique in the world!
Would you road trip to these flaming mountains?

Being in the second deepest depression point, the temperature itself is referred as the Turpan depression here. Turpan is "the" hottest place in China and it derived it's name from the Turpan volcano which once flowed here a long ago. As we started to thinking about the Xinjiang expedition, the first place came to my mind is Turpan. Although back in home was also hot, even I couldn't bear this heat. Also in the history of China, this land has been ruled by many kingdoms and it has seen so many wars. For a while, I just questioned myself whether I'm in Mars or Earth; such is the effect of this landscape. Be prepared for a sweating tour guys #urbanexplorer #leaveyourmark #xinjiangtravel

Popularised by the classic Chinese novel, Journey to the West, the Flaming Mountains near Turpan - in Xinjiang province - are renowned for their fiery red appearance.⠀
⠀
During the day, under the blazing sunlight, the mountains glow and seemingly burn, with hot air swirling into the air - implying the notion that they are, indeed, on fire. During the summer months, the Flaming Mountains become the hottest place in China, and not even a single blade of grass dares to grow.⠀

Michaela (@uncoveringcities) As a classic recollection of the Journey to the West, the Flame Mountain naturally has the elements of Journey to the West. The door logo is a sculpture with a shape like a flame. The sun is standing on the tip of the tongue, and the banana fan is still on the shoulder. From the door, visitors are quickly substituted into the Journey to the West. There is also a sculpture on the pillars along the way, with the shape of the palm of the Buddha's hand. There is a image of Sun Wukong in each palm. This is actually not difficult to understand. Borrowing the opening of the Journey to the West, Sun Wukong can't escape the story of the palm of his hand. Its so wonderful, its very special! The ticket for
Flame Mountain is 40 yuan per person. After the ticket is purchased in turn, the oncoming is a promenade. This gallery is also very memorable and distinctive. First of all, the ceiling is shaped like a blue sky, and it feels very attentive. However, the most classic is that there are dozens of stone carvings on either side of the gallery. These paintings are the stories of each chapter in the Journey to the West. Although not every chapter has been shown, basically the most classic ones are left on the wall. From Wuzhishan to rescue Wukong, to return to the ninety-nine, a corridor is a Journey to the West. Many people will slow down here and slowly recall the stories that accompany us to grow up.
From the lobby, it is a sunken mini-square with a logo of the Flame Mountain View. This is a thermometer for measuring the temperature of the earth's surface. It is made of a gold hoop. There is also a sculpture of Sun Wukong next to it, looking at the stick, as if it is "bigger, bigger." Very representative. Listening to the staff, the hottest time of the year, the surface temperature in the Turpan area can reach 80-90 degrees, and the sand is buried in the egg for half an hour. Because the terrain is a basin, and the annual precipitation is very small, the weather is hot, the name of the flame mountain is born.
Going to the ground, there are 3 sculptures that are familiar to tourists. They are the figure of the four figures of Emperor Tang and the masters of the Flame Mountain, the statue of the demon king and the statue of the iron fan. These are places where tourists are keen to take photos, and they are very popular!
Finally, I will share some dry goods for you. Because I just arrived at the Flame Mountain, I heard the peers say that the Flame Mountain can't fly the drone. It was hit down last year, and we are also shocked. But in the end, by asking the locals and actual combat, I would like to summarize the following. The Flame Mountain Scenic Area is definitely not flying. If it is flying, it must be stopped. If it is, it will be violently defeated. But the flame mountain can fly! ! The mountain behind the Flame Mountain and a mountain next to it form a canyon where you can take off successfully. But please be careful not to fly over the hill to the scenic spot. If the violation is broken, it should be deserved. Taking off in the back mountain, you can also enjoy the magnificent scenery of the Flame Mountain, and there are canyons to accompany, the scenery is more charming. So here we are dedicated to the most exclusive flame mountain aerial photography tips, we must pay attention!

Kumtag Desert Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
Kumtag Desert Adventures 🐪
We visited Kumtag Desert near Turpan. We payed for the 600¥ option and got a 60minute Jeep ride and got to sand slide. It was such a fun experience and well worth the money!
The Kumutage Desert, the third largest desert in Xinjiang, and the only desert connected to the city. The mirage, which is 20 kilometers away from the scenic spot, is a free view point, has a free desert, and can camp for free. The best time to shoot in
the desert is sunrise and sunset. At this time, the light of the sun is soft and not glaring, and the desert will show multiple changes of light and shadow.
The Kumutage Desert is located on the eastern edge of the Turpan Basin. It is the only desert in the world that is connected to the city. It is a desert in the city. Green does not retreat and sand does not enter. The wind from the Tianjiao Qijiaojing vent and the Dabancheng vents, with a lot of sand, finally collided and deposited in the Kumutage area, forming this desert with sand mountains.
This desert on the edge of Shanshan City, the terrain is sand nest, honeycomb sand, flat sand, wavy sand dune, fish scale sand slope, desert Gobi mixed land. The dunes are clear and well-defined; the ridgeline is smooth and smooth, the windward slope is like water, and the leeward slope is like sand. It is a pity that you can't wait until sunset, in the depths of the desert, in the depths of the sand, watching the magnificent scenery of "the desert is solitary, the long river is falling into the sun" is also regrettable.
day in the dessert
this was the Kumtag dessert in a town called Turpan in the xinjiang province. the price to get in is quite pricey however it does come with many great facilities such as bus ride to and from the main view point. the dessert has nice soft sands and sand skiing was amazing there very worth the trip.

Yarkhoto Ruins Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
This is all that’s left of the world’s largest, oldest and best preserved city made of earthen buildings.⠀
⠀
The natural fortress was once the capital of the Jushi Kingdom, and sits atop a high plateau, between two deep and steep river valleys.⠀
⠀
Made from Turpan’s desert stiltstone, you can walk along a path that mimics the old main street and duck into the shells of old temples and houses.⠀

Michaela (@uncoveringcities) Turpan Self-Drive/Private Car One-Day Tour Detailed Guide, with a Map of Turpan Attractions Distribution
Turpan travel guide, this article is enough: what to eat, what to play, introduction to attractions, travel transportation | with a map of Turpan attractions distribution.
1⃣ Transportation
For a day trip to Turpan via Urumqi, you can choose to arrive at Turpan North Station (the new station is closer to the downtown area). For the return trip, you can choose from Shanshan North Station to Urumqi.
2⃣ One-Day Itinerary (for reference only)
Turpan North Station ➡️ Jiaohe Ancient City ➡️ Local market next to Karez Well Park (free) ➡️ Turpan Museum ➡️ Internet-famous antique shop (free to take photos outside) ➡️ Flaming Mountains ➡️ Tuyugou Mazha Village ➡️ Kumtag Desert ➡️ Return from Shanshan North Station to Urumqi
3⃣ Cuisine
There aren't many food options along the way, but you can find breakfast and lunch near the downtown area and Tuyugou Mazha Village. If the itinerary includes the desert, dinner can be had in Shanshan County.
Downtown: The baked buns opposite the Turpan Museum are very delicious, with thin skin and juicy filling, and not greasy at 3 yuan each. After visiting the museum, you can buy some to try (locals buy them by the box, and you can pick up the last one or two left from the oven).
4⃣ About the Attractions
① Karez Well Park
The attraction is relatively old, with vineyards inside. Before the grapes grow, it takes 5-10 minutes to visit, and 10-25 minutes for photos and play when the grapes are out. The free market across the street is more interesting.
② Flaming Mountains
You can drive by from the outside, the view from the outside is enough, and you can take photos there. If you want to mimic the shadow with a banana fan, you can buy a ticket to go inside.
③ Kumtag Desert
It's recommended to wear shoe covers, buy a ticket, and casually climb a small sand dune for photos and to watch the sunset. If you've been to other deserts, you can skip this one as they all look quite similar.
④ Tuyugou Mazha Village
Mazha Village is the filming location of Dilraba's 'Anarhan'. Continuing towards the desert from the village leads to Tuyugou.
⑤ Thousand Buddha Caves
Free to visit, recommended by other bloggers as good, but it was under repair when I visited. It should be open by May Day.
5⃣ Other
① Attractions in Turpan downtown are relatively scattered, so renting a car for self-driving or sharing a private car is more convenient.
② Xinjiang's cold skin noodles have a sour taste.
③ The best photo spot in Mazha Village is at the parking lot at the entrance of the scenic area.
④ Aerial photography spots: Tuyugou, Kumtag Desert. Remember to hand-launch and catch when flying over the desert.
In Jiaohe Ancient City, attend a date with the sunset
❤Recommended reason: From an aerial view, Jiaohe Ancient City looks like a large willow leaf. The two rivers intersecting around the city are natural moats; due to the erosion of the river, the edge of the platform has formed cliffs up to tens of meters high, and the towering cliffs are city walls. The fortress built of raw soil, the 'fully armed' city, even allowed the Cheshi small country sandwiched between the Han and Xiongnu to enjoy a national dynasty for more than 500 years, creating a beacon legend on the Silk Road. At dusk, the golden sunlight coats Jiaohe Ancient City with a layer of gold film, adding to the historical heaviness of the ancient city.
🗓Itinerary: It is recommended to go to the scenic area at six or seven in the afternoon, when it is relatively not so hot and the light is better. The tour lasts about 3 hours.
💰Tickets: The ticket is 70, and the shuttle bus is 25.
📝Note tips: Aerial photography is not allowed in the scenic area, but it is possible outside the scenic area. For the location address, use the mobile map👉🏻There is a country road on the north side of the ancient city. You can park on the side of the road to overlook Jiaohe Ancient City (p1/2, p5/6 perspective), or you can fly. The surrounding area is all vineyards, and there are houses for drying raisins.
Jiaohe Ancient City
Turpan has two famous ruins, one is Jiaohe Ancient City, and the other is Gaochang Ancient City.
Jiaohe Ancient City is recommended because it is the largest, oldest, and best-preserved raw soil building city in the world. It is also the most complete urban relic preserved in our country for more than two thousand years.
The ancient city once had a complete social system, such as residences, pagodas, and official residences. Some parts of the once prosperous blocks and temple halls are still preserved, and some structures can be imagined now.
Walking to the center of the main road of the ancient city, looking from the viewing platform, Jiaohe immersed in the long river of history, only left with mottled and old, also hides a huge mystery.
In addition to the ancient city, there are ancient villages, ethnic architectural features, which are artificially built later, not strong in ornamental, can be skipped.
Tour tips:
Main road: The ancient city scenic area is very large, first take the electric car, to reach the farthest ancient city area, the general tour group's route is along the scenic area sign, walk the middle viewing route, reach the viewing platform and return to the entrance immediately.
Auxiliary road: If you are free to travel, you can take an unusual road, in addition to the middle section can be visited, both sides of the main road can lead to different places. The farthest place can reach the square of the Buddha Pagoda Temple ruins, where there are few people and quiet, you can take some big shots.

Turpan Museum, an eye-opener
The best way to understand a city is to visit its museum.
About the exhibition
The Turpan Museum has more than 20,000 cultural relics, making it the second largest museum in Xinjiang after the Autonomous Region Museum. There are five exhibition halls in the museum, namely the Silk Road Pearl Turpan General History Exhibition Hall, the Archaeological Anthropology Specimen and Burial Relics Exhibition Hall (Mummy Exhibition Hall), the Turpan Beautiful Rhinoceros Fossil Exhibition Hall, the Excavated Document Exhibition Hall and the Excavated Coin Exhibition Hall.
Basic information
Time: 10:30-19:00 (Tuesday to Sunday)
Location: Turpan Museum (1268 Munar Road, Gaochang District)
Cost: Free (advance reservation required during peak season)
The most distinctive features of the Turpan Museum are probably the rhinoceros fossils and mummies
The rhinoceros fossil here is probably the most complete rhinoceros skeleton fossil unearthed in the world. Standing under the fossil, one can't help but marvel at how small humans are
Mummy series
It exhibits 11 mummies from the Spring and Autumn Period to the Qing Dynasty. The most shocking one is a burly Tang Dynasty soldier. He is over 1000 years old, with neat hair and strong muscles that look elastic, as if he just fell asleep
It's also scary, I dare not take pictures
Surrounding food:
The Koxi Maklar roasted buns across from the museum are recommended by locals, who say they have been on TV. The fusion of onions and mutton is very good, juicy and tender, with slightly less filling, but overall it's not bad.
Sulaiman Noodle King
Their mixed noodles are really good, the rice in their hand-grabbed rice is glutinous and clear, the meat quality is relatively good, their grilled skewers are also delicious without the smell of mutton

Attention:
1. In Xinjiang, everything is sold by weight, with 1 kilogram equaling 2 jin (1000g). Make sure to convert the price before making a purchase.
2. The Xinjiang government opens the Duku Highway from June to October every year. Please book your own travel time in advance.
3. When visiting a mosque, pay attention to respecting the local people's religious beliefs and customs. Do not discuss religious issues, and maintain silence when visiting the mosque for worship.
4. It is best to obtain the consent of the locals before filming them. You can communicate patiently, make friends with a smile, and not treat the locals as mere scenery in the lens.
5. Urumqi's peak time for restricting out-of-town vehicles: legal working days (Monday to Friday) morning peak from 9:30 to 10:30, evening peak from 19:30 to 20:30.
6. In Yining, the restricted hours for non-local vehicles are on legal working days (Monday to Friday) from 08:50-10:20, 13:00-14:00, and 19:20-20:20.
7. It is best to collect detailed information about Xinjiang, including transportation, dining, accommodation, scenic spots, and other aspects, before embarking on a self-driving tour. With this information, you can make a relatively accurate budget.
8. Check the vehicle before departure every day. Before departure every day, conduct a comprehensive inspection of the vehicle, including checking for oil and water leaks (look for oil stains on the ground under the car), measuring tire pressure, and checking if the tire pressure is appropriate; check the condition of the engine oil (pull out the dipstick and see if the color of the oil on top is normal and if the oil level is appropriate); don't forget to check if the spare tire is intact.
Duku Highway Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
I stayed in Xinjiang for a month to tell you some things not to do
Don't ask how much the ticket is, ask how many years of youth are left. I decided to embark on a journey to Xinjiang in the northwest of my motherland, using a month to find my lost soul. After coming back, I am full of motivation, often staring at the photos in a daze.
To help friends who want to go to Xinjiang, I have compiled this travel guide, hoping to help everyone!
Where should I go first when I go to Xinjiang for the first time?
Urumqi, as the transportation hub of Xinjiang, is very convenient whether it is South Xinjiang or North Xinjiang. It is recommended to choose Urumqi as the first stop, because whether it is a group tour or self-driving, almost all vehicles start from here.
Precautions:
Time difference: There is a 2-hour time difference between Xinjiang and the mainland
Many ethnic minorities are used to saying Xinjiang time
Security check: Xinjiang's security check is very strict, train stations and airports require multiple security checks, it is recommended to go to the train station/airport in advance
Accommodation recommendation:
Urumqi: Recommend Friendly Business Circle or Zhongshan Road Business Circle
Kanas: Recommend Beitun City, secondly, Jadunyu and Burqin can be recommended
Hemu: Recommend staying in the scenic area log cabin, watching the stars all over the sky at night, increasing the play time during the day, and the experience is better
Sailimu Lake: Accommodation is recommended to stay in Qingshuihe Town or Huocheng County
Our self-driving route:
Starting from Urumqi, go to Sailimu Lake—Huocheng—Zhaosu—Tekes—Qiongkushitai—Nalati—Duku Highway, and finally return to Urumqi from Dushanzi.
The route is just a circle, which is a classic Yili ring line.
ps: The above self-driving journey is 12 days in total, a total of 2300 kilometers, without rushing to the road and rushing to the scenic spots, often 5-6 hours of self-driving time every day. I feel that rest and maintaining a good state are necessary.
Must-visit attractions:
Qiongkushitai: The grassland covering the sky, the fairy tale forest like a mist, the small wooden house with grass on the head, every eye is super healing
Huocheng Lavender: The purple sea of flowers tumbling with the wind is really romantic
Tangbula Fairy Lake: A small popular secret that needs to ride a horse up the mountain, accompanied by flowers all the way, it seems to be Alice in Wonderland
Nalati Grassland: The aerial photography and self-driving of the grassland and valley in the sky are absolutely amazing!
Sailimu Lake: "The last tear of the Atlantic"
If you have plenty of time, you must go for a self-driving tour around the lake
Duku Highway: Duku Highway that must be self-driving once in a lifetime! It will open around mid-June every year, and you will feel the four seasons along the way.
Xinjiang cuisine:
The big plate chicken, lamb skewers, roasted lamb chops, and roasted buns in Xinjiang are really amazing, and those who like heavy tastes can close their eyes.
ps: There are also old yogurt, cold water fish, hand-grabbed rice, wrapped meat, pulled strips and other delicacies waiting for you to taste!
Duku Highway: A magnificent journey across the north and south of the Tianshan Mountains
Are you tired of the hustle and bustle of the city? Do you long for a spontaneous trip to experience the grandeur of nature and the charm of Xinjiang? Then, Duku Highway is your best choice!
Duku Highway, connecting the north and south of Xinjiang, crossing grasslands, canyons, snow mountains, Gobi and other places, is a must-visit place for tourists. Here, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the four seasons and feel the magic of nature.
