Houshi River in Xinchang Ancient Town is an important part of the town’s water system. The ancient bridges over the river showcase the unique charm of the Jiangnan water town. *History and Culture Houshi River is located on the west side of the North-South Street of the ancient town, with a total length of about 1500 meters, maintaining a distance of about 50 meters from the street. Several ancient bridges are distributed along the river, such as Shou’en Bridge (Baojia Bridge), Hongfu Bridge, and Qianqiu Bridge. These bridges were mostly built during the Ming and Qing dynasties and serve both transportation and scenic purposes. These ancient bridges are not only transportation hubs but also witnesses to the historical changes of the ancient town, reflecting the unique pattern of Jiangnan water towns where “streets are formed by rivers and houses are connected by bridges.” ① Shou’en Bridge (Baojia Bridge): Originally built in the eighth year of the Ming Zhengtong period (1443) by imperial physician Shen Wenzheng to facilitate the passage of the people. It was initially named “Shou’en Bridge” and later renamed “Baojia Bridge” because it is located over Baoqiao Port. It is now an important node on Houshi River. ② Hongfu Bridge: Built during the Ming Zhengde period (around 1506-1521) and rebuilt in the 47th year of the Qing Qianlong period (1783). It is located at the intersection of North Street and Hongxi Street. A feng shui stone is embedded in the center of the bridge, and it is said that stepping on it brings good luck. ③ Qianqiu Bridge: Built during the Kangxi period (1662-1722), spanning Dongheng Port. It was well preserved after renovation in 1983. The bridge body is engraved with auspicious phrases encouraging kindness. *Tour Highlights ① Reflections of Ancient Buildings: Both banks of Houshi River feature typical Jiangnan water town architecture, with white walls and black tiles arranged in an orderly manner, decorated with red lanterns. When the water is clear, the buildings along the banks are clearly reflected, creating a symmetrical beauty. The best time for photography is in the soft light of early morning or evening. ② Riverside Gardens: The east bank of Houshi River was once home to wealthy families who built back gardens on the opposite bank. These gardens have now been restored and transformed, such as the Greenfield Garden, which features winding paths, stepping stones, and scenic rocks. They complement the ancient buildings across the river and are great spots for photography. ③ Ancient Bridges: There are several ancient bridges over Houshi River, such as Ma’an Shui Bridge. These bridges have simple and rustic designs, with stone slabs and railings bearing historical marks. Standing on the bridge, you can capture panoramic views of the winding river and the scenery on both banks, or use the ancient bridge as a foreground to photograph boats on the river or buildings on the opposite bank. ④ Night Scenery: The waterfront lighting project in the Xinchang Ancient Town scenic area adds a splendid night view to Houshi River. At night, the outlines of the ancient buildings are clear under the lighting, with light and shadow interwoven along the stone revetments. The shimmering river surface reflects the scenery, creating a charming picture where reflections and reality blend beautifully.
