Shanghai Pudong Xinchang Ancient Town

Xinchang was formed in the mid-Tang Dynasty and was commonly known as "Shisun Beach" and "Shisunli". In the second year of the Jianyan period of the Southern Song Dynasty (1128), Xinchang was established as a town. In the Yuan Dynasty, Xinchang was set up as the Liangzhe Salt Transport Department. Xinchang Ancient Town maintains the traditional Jiangnan water town style of the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China, with Xinchang Street and East and West Hong Street as the cross-shaped framework, traditional buildings as the texture, and river network water system as the support. The four rivers in the town divide the old town into a "well" shape, with more than 20 houses and halls with more than three entrances on both sides of the river, and nearly 100 ancient houses. The ancient town has 150,000 square meters of ancient buildings, of which 40,000 square meters are traditional residential patterns with more than two entrances, 68 ancient ceremonial gates, 2,000 meters of old streets, 1,200 meters of Ming and Qing stone revetments, and 20 courtyards with more than three entrances, covering about 20,000 square meters. It presents the historical charm of "eight ancient" streets, ancient archways, ancient houses, ancient ceremonial gates, ancient bridges, ancient revetments, ancient temples, and ancient ginkgo trees, leaving the unique courtyard pattern of "front shop, middle house, and garden across the water", and the ancient town style of Jiangnan water town is well preserved. It is a famous historical and cultural town in China.
