The Tushanwan Museum, adjacent to Xuhui High School, is the most easily overlooked museum in the Magic City. After the Opium War, the Treaty of Whampoa lifted the ban on Catholicism that had lasted for over a hundred years, opening the door for the spread of Catholicism in China. In 1864, the Shanghai Jesuits established the Tushanwan Orphanage. The subsequent Tushanwan Orphanage Craft Institute not only took in orphans and impoverished children but also introduced and taught various Western skills, cultivating generations of arts and crafts talents. At that time, nearly eighty percent of the painted glass on the Chinese market was made in Tushanwan! The museum's treasure, the 'Chinese Archway,' was built in 1914 by dozens of Tushanwan orphans. It won the highest award at the 'San Francisco Panama-Pacific International Exposition' - the Grand Prize Medal! In 1867, the Tushanwan Printing House was founded, taking the lead in technology. In 1874, it was the first to introduce lithography. In 1875, it was the first to introduce collotype printing technology; in 1900, it was the first to introduce the photogravure printing technology invented by Chavet. Tushanwan has nurtured generations of artistic celebrities, such as the art educator Zhou Xiang, photographer An Jingzhai, painters Xu Yongqing and Zhang Yuguang, architect Pan Kegong, printer Qiu Ziang, sculptor Zhang Chongren, and master woodcarver Xu Baoqing, among others. Ren Bonian, Xu Beihong, Liu Haisu, advertising artist Hang Zhiying, photographers Lang Jingshan, and Jian Qingfu, among others, were also influenced by the art of Tushanwan.
