The lifestyle of Nioya Bookstore

Located on Yan'an West Road, Shangsheng New Place is one of the popular check-in spots in Shanghai. The most famous Nioya Bookstore is the first store in Shanghai, located in the American Country Club, a century-old historical building, which used to be a social and leisure place for Shanghai overseas Chinese. I remember that when the bookstore opened in 2020, it was fully booked every day, and people wanted to visit but couldn't. 🌟Highlights: The American Country Club was built around 1925, designed by Elliott Hazzard, and is a Spanish Baroque style building. The south gable door has Baroque decorations. The entrance on the north side is a semi-circular arch, the gable is in Baroque style, decorated with simplified gourd bottle decorations. The north gable of the main hall is also in Baroque style, with a rose-shaped ventilation hole in the gable, and 5 decorative gourds on the top of the gable. It is an excellent historical building in Shanghai. ✅Must experience: Nioya Bookstore (TSUTAYA BOOKS) is a bookstore brand from Japan. This bookstore has developed a new role, becoming a new cultural venue. With the protection and display of architectural beauty, the recording and continuation of historical context as the main axis, it integrates urban renewal and cultural heritage. With museum-like scene design, it gives a sense of ceremony to reading, and builds an art and culture source area of about 2000 square meters. 1⃣️Floor Mainly historical, cultural and natural books, a Nioya coffee is split out, immersed in the fragrance of coffee and books. There are also interesting stationery and miscellaneous items, take a good look around, pick and choose. A small area in the east hall is opened up, with tables and chairs, which is very suitable for various reading clubs. 2⃣️Floor Mainly architectural, art and fashion books, and there is an area dedicated to selling various crafts. Both taste and appearance are online. 🕙Business hours: 10:00~22:00

The first branch of its kind to open in Shanghai, Tsutaya Books 📚 can be found in Columbia Circle in a villa that used to be the residence of Sun Yat Sen’s son. The store has been open for a just couple of months but has already taken Chinese social media by storm. A number of unique books can be found in Tsutaya - many of which we haven’t really found at other bookstores. Among them, there’s a particularly large selection of books related to art, as well as architecture and design. There’s also a small section of books in English. The store’s interior is characterized by narrow hallways and old fashioned woodwork, offering a contrast to many of Shanghai's newly opened, ultramodern stores. It’s worth a visit even if to just check out the architecture. Sculptures and other pieces of art can be found scattered among the shelves and shelves of books. A café can be found on the first floor just as you walk in. On the second floor, you’ll find a restaurant with Japanese-American style fusion cuisine. Try out dishes like gyoza hot wings , beer steamed mussels, and cheese ebi chili. Cocktails with literature-inspired names are also on the menu, like Between Calmness and Passion and Theory of Relativity. A meal with drinks will average out at around CNY300 per person. In all of its splendor, this bookstore is quite popular among locals looking for the next insta-worthy shot. For this reason, you’ll have to make a reservation in advance on the store’s WeChat mini program if you want to visit. 📍 Location: Columbia Circle, 1262 West Yan’an Road ⏰ Hours: 10:00–23:00 #shanghaistyle #shanghaichic #bookstore #bookshop  #lightthecity#urbanexplorer#hipsterbookstore
