Uzbekistan | Shahrisabz, a World Cultural Heritage Site.

❤Why it's recommended: Shahrisabz is a town in southern Uzbekistan and a World Cultural Heritage Site. It is located 80 kilometers from Samarkand and was built 2,700 years ago. 👍Top recommendation: The Ak-Saray Palace, Timur's summer palace. The only remaining parts of the Ak-Saray Palace are two opposing walls. The bricks of the walls are decorated with blue patterns, making it the most spectacular ancient building in Uzbekistan (see images 2 and 3). 👍Top recommendation: The Dorut Tilavat architectural complex. This complex is divided into two parts. The eastern part consists of two adjacent blue domes, which are the earliest structures in the complex. The other structures were added later. The other part of the complex is a larger blue dome building opposite the two blue domes, which is known as the Kok Gumbaz Mosque (see images 4, 5, and 6). 👍Top recommendation: The Dorus-Saodat mausoleum complex. This is the mausoleum that Emperor Timur built for himself during his lifetime. It was supposed to be the main burial site for the Timur family and is very tall. However, when Emperor Timur's body was transported to Samarkand, it was already deep winter. The mountains between Samarkand and Shahrisabz were blocked by heavy snow, so Timur was buried in the Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum in Samarkand. This magnificent mausoleum was then forgotten (see images 7, 8, and 9).
