Good places to go in March | Ancient windmills in Mandraki Port, Rhodes

#MarchGoodPlaces2025 On the eastern breakwater of Mandraki Harbor in Rhodes stand the three most famous windmills. They are located next to the Fortress of St. Nicholas, and each one carries a rich historical story, telling the past of this land and Rhodes Town. Recently, archaeological excavations have made new discoveries. The foundations of five windmills have been unearthed on the rocks. These relics seem to be whispering, telling even more ancient stories. Looking back in history, early maps and a famous woodcut from 1486 depicted the magnificent scene of about 18 stone tower windmills around the port. These windmills were once important facilities for grinding corn for export and are a testament to Rhode Island's prosperous trade. However, as time goes by, most of the windmills have disappeared, leaving only traces of history. Although the existing windmills have gone through vicissitudes, they still retain their unique architectural style: each windmill is equipped with a pair of speeding millstones, and a unique rotating wooden top cover design has been developed on its cylindrical stone tower, demonstrating the wisdom and creativity of ancient craftsmen. Today, visitors can stroll along the East Breakwater, see these historical sites up close, and experience the rich history of Rhode Island.
