Perast was a small fishing village in the 14th century, but it began to prosper under the rule of the Republic of Venice in the 16th and 17th centuries, and numerous churches and various buildings built over the centuries through the Middle Ages are well preserved, making it famous as a romantic, idyllic coastal town. In particular, the landmarks that symbolize Perast are the island of St. George and the island of Our Lady of the Rocks, located 400m off the coast. Our Lady of the Rocks is an artificial island created by fishermen of Perast. When the icon of the Virgin and Child was discovered at the current location in 1452, fishermen transported rocks and sank ships to create an island, and built a church in 1632. You can get there in less than 30 minutes by bus from Kotor.
