Originally a grain market, it also hosted other commercial activities. The building underwent renovations and was acquired by the Cathedral Canons in the early 17th century. The surrounding area was sealed off and used as a warehouse and sales space. Following the de-Samorisization of Mendizábal in the 19th century, it fell into the hands of the Paeria, who handed it over to the military and used it as a barracks until the 1980s, when it was finally used as a barracks for the Armed Police (riot control unit).
