Gifu Castle, Japan

Gifu City is very close to Nagoya, just a 20-minute train ride from Nagoya Station. It's perfect for a day trip to see Gifu Castle, where Oda Nobunaga began his "Tenka Fubu" campaign. You can hike up to Gifu Castle, which takes about an hour, or you can do what I did and take the cable car. Once you reach the castle, you can enjoy the surrounding scenery. The mountain is high, so you can see everything, including the Nagara River winding through the city.
