I recently visited Cheong Fatt Tze's Blue Mansion in Penang and opted for the audio self-guided tour, which I highly recommend for its flexibility compared to the scheduled guided tours. This stunning mansion, once home to one of Asia's wealthiest men, has been beautifully restored and now serves as a museum, hotel, and restaurant. As I explored the mansion, I was captivated by its exquisite furnishings, crafted from the finest materials of its time. The design reflects the rich heritage and opulence associated with Cheong Fatt Tze. One fascinating aspect was the Feng Shui principles applied in the mansion, particularly the "Four Points of Gold." These four iron cast columns in the main courtyard are said to conceal buried gold, symbolizing the prosperity Cheong aimed to secure for his family. The mansion’s striking indigo hue, derived from indigoferra arecta, a highly prized dye in the 19th century, adds to its allure and prestige. While the courtyards are lovely, it's worth noting that some areas are reserved exclusively for hotel guests, limiting access for visitors.
