[Fukui, Ichijodani Asakura Clan Ruins🏯] Visit "Japan's Pompeii" where the romance of the Warring States period lives on

Located on the outskirts of Fukui City, the Ichijodani Asakura Clan Ruins are the remains of a castle town of the prestigious Asakura clan, who ruled Echizen during the Sengoku period. Even after its destruction in a battle with Nobunaga approximately 400 years ago, the town remained almost completely intact beneath the ground, earning it the nickname "Japan's Pompeii." Today, samurai residences, townhouses, and artisan homes have been faithfully restored, creating a townscape that feels like you've traveled back in time to the Sengoku period. The cobblestone streets, waterways, and gardens, among other attractions, offer a realistic sense of what life was like back then. If you're lucky, you might even spot a guide dressed in armor! The changing scenery of the area, with cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in autumn, is a sight to behold. We also recommend touring the nearby Asakura Yoshikage Tomb and Ichijodani Asakura Clan Garden. 📌 Useful Information Address: 28-37 Kidonouchi-cho, Fukui City, Fukui Prefecture, 910-2153 Access: Approximately 15 minutes on foot from JR Ichijodani Station / Approximately 20 minutes by car from downtown Fukui Opening Hours: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM (Restored Townscape) Admission Fee: ¥330 for adults, free for high school students and younger Parking: Available (Free) Feel the atmosphere of the Warring States period at the remains of a castle town nestled in a quiet mountain valley. Your inner historical lover is sure to be awakened. #IchijodaniAsakuraClanRuins #FukuiTourism #WarringStatesRomance #AsakuraYoshikage #JapanesePompeii #HistoricalTravel #RestoredTownscape #FukuiTrip #ZeroYenTravel2025Autumn

Not easy to get to but well worth the trip if you are into Japanese history and can speak and understand a even a little Japanese. This is the site of a castletown that flourished deep in the mountains and nothing remained. Now there are a number of reconstructed residences and a large portion of the site has been excavated showing pillars, walls, wells, and so forth. A small museum has relics of medieval life. There is a small waterfall called 'Ichijo-daki' deep in the woods, about 3 km from Ichijodani Asakura Ruins. It is quite small waterfalls compared to other waterfalls I’ve visited but definitely worth a visit. #givethanks #givethanks
