Even after its destruction in a battle with Nobunaga approximately 400 years ago, the town remained almost completely intact beneath the ground, earning it the nickname "Japan's Pompeii." Today, samurai residences, townhouses, and artisan homes have been faithfully restored, creating a townscape that feels like you've traveled back in time to the Sengoku period. The cobblestone streets, waterways, and gardens, among other attractions, offer a realistic sense of what life was like back then. If you're lucky, you might even spot a guide dressed in armor!
