Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine

#FuriTabi Mount Fuji has been worshipped with awe since ancient times, but Sengen Shrine was first enshrined in the early Heian period to quell eruptions. As settlements formed around Mount Fuji, it came to be enshrined in each village as a local deity. Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine has a history of over 1,900 years and is a miraculous shrine that serves as the gateway to the Fuji mountain trail. Formerly a prefectural shrine, it is now a designated shrine under the Association of Shinto Shrines. It marks the starting point of the Yoshida Trail ascent of Mount Fuji and is registered as a World Heritage Site as part of the "Mount Fuji Region," one of the components of "Mount Fuji: A Place of Sacred Worship and Source of Artistic Inspiration."
