Winter Wonders in Fukui – Temples, Dinosaurs & Peaceful Shrines

#cityplaybook Fukui in winter is something special. With quiet temples wrapped in snow, crisp mountain air, and a few unexpected surprises, it’s a destination that blends tradition with curiosity. I started my journey at Eiheiji Temple, one of Japan’s most important Zen temples. The sound of snow underfoot and the calm silence of the halls created a meditative kind of magic. Next, I visited Kehi Shrine, known for its massive torii gate and peaceful grounds—especially beautiful in the soft winter light. And then came something completely different: Echizen Daibutsu at Daishizan Seidaiji. The scale of the statue (and the temple around it) was absolutely jaw-dropping. It’s quiet, grand, and strangely under the radar. To finish off the day, I couldn’t resist the Fukui Dinosaur Museum. One of the best in the world, it’s full of life-sized skeletons and fun exhibits—because even peaceful trips need a little roar. Why I recommend Fukui in winter: ・You’ll experience deep stillness at some of Japan’s most sacred places ・The mix of quiet temples and quirky museums makes for a truly unique trip 📍Fukui Prefecture, Japan #fukui #japaninwinter #eiheiji #echizendaibutsu #kehishrine #fukuidinosaurmuseum #hiddenjapan #zenescape #cityguide #slowtravel
