Bukhara Biennale: When History Meets Local Art

This time in Bukhara, I happened to stumble upon the ongoing art biennial. Entitled "Recipes for Broken Hearts," it used the traditional dish of pilaf (plov) as a metaphor for healing, time, and shared dining, exploring multiple dimensions of art, craft, cooking, and performance. Overall, this exhibition was more than just an artistic spectacle; it also injected new perspectives and vitality into the ancient city. The once-quiet stone-brick alleys became "interactive" through the resonance of contemporary works. The city itself became the exhibition venue, history became the medium, and residents became participants. The ancient city, thus, ceased to be a static legacy and transformed into a "live" place. It reminded us that tradition is not just a museum specimen, but an ongoing phenomenon.
