Enggano Island is the outermost island in Indonesia which is located in the Indian Ocean with fierce storms and high sea waves reaching six meters during extreme weather. The island covering an area of ​​400.6 square kilometers is a sub-district within the territory of the North Bengkulu Regency Government, Bengkulu Province. Biodiversity is still maintained, such as mangrove forests, beaches, riparian forests, pamah forests, and freshwater swamps. In Indonesia, not many islands have complete coastal ecosystems such as in Enggano with variants of mangrove forests on land, seagrass beds on the coast, and coral reefs in the sea. Mukti Dono Wilopo, Head of the Fisheries Laboratory of the Marine Science Study Program at Bengkulu University, explained that coral reef cover on the eastern side of the island was still above 70 percent in 2014. However, two years later many coral reefs died due to climate change. Between 2015 and 2016, the increase in sea water temperature due to the El Nino atmospheric phenomenon caused many coral reefs on Enggano Island to become fragile and then die. The results of a research by an academic at the University of Bengkulu, the extent of coral reef cover decreased, leaving 47-50 percent. Although the decline is still in the moderate category, this condition is much lower than the conditions before El Nino. Since four years ago until now, Bengkulu University has continued to assist local communities in improving coral reefs. Damage to the underwater ecosystem due to climate change causes a decrease in fishermen's catches.
