One of Spain's oldest and most traditional universities

Andalucia Tour ~ Jaén (Region) Baeza had a university before the cities of Úbeda and Jaén. The building was constructed at the end of the 16th century. The most important part of this building is the courtyard. St. John of Avila was a schoolmaster. It was founded by the Rev. Dr. Rodrigo Lopez, a relative of Pope Paul III. The insular nature of the old university of Baeza led to a mystical tendency among its students, known as “alumbrados,” who were subsequently investigated by the Spanish Inquisition.
