Another small town perched on a cliff

Andalucia Tour ~ Cadiz (Region) Perched on a dramatic cliff, Arcos de la Frontera is a picturesque town in the province of Cádiz, full of small traces of its Arab heritage. Its old town has been declared a cultural heritage. Towers, churches and stunning viewpoints with views of the Guadalete River are just some of the many attractions in the area, right on the White Villages Route. But Arcos is also a place that has faithfully preserved its traditions, as can be seen in its festivals (such as Easter) or in its cuisine based on Iberian pig and horticultural products. Inhabited since prehistoric times, the Arabs in the Middle Ages made Medina Alcorsin an important defensive stronghold. Later, its strategic value meant that it became the capital of the Taifa Kingdom. The Arab past left an urban pattern of steep, narrow streets on the rocky headland of Arcos de la Frontera, with the Guadalete River winding at its foot. The historic center has a large number of monuments and is located between the Belém Gate and the Matrona Gate, the only surviving entrance of the ancient Arab city walls. The city center is the Plaza del Cabildo. Some of the city’s most notable buildings are concentrated in this space, such as the Town Hall and the Ducal Castle, a Muslim fortress built in the 15th century. Opposite is the Parador de Turismo, located in the old Casa del Corregidor. White walls, grilles and tiles are some of the building’s features, and its typical Andalusian architecture fits perfectly into the houses of Arcos. Before leaving the square, visitors can head to one of the many viewpoints in the area to enjoy impressive panoramic views of the surrounding area. #2024TravelReview #SpainTravel #Andalucia
