Parking: There is plenty of free roadside parking along Ransom Road. Contact: If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact the organiser Kayleigh at info@staa-allotments.org.uk About Jo Jo is Staa’s CEO and Chair of the Nottingham Growing Network. She’s particularly passionate about seasonal, sustainable British blooms. You might think that the family floristry business sparked an early interest in all things floral. But it wasn’t until running a training centre in the 1990s, where Jo set up City & Guilds horticultural qualifications (as she has also recently done at STAA, too) that her spark for growing ignited. From growing up without a garden to growing on 1.75 acres, Jo’s love of all things floral really bloomed with the emergence of garden style floral arrangements. Nothing beats gorgeous, highly scented cut flowers fresh from farm to gate. Jo’s style shows that flowers don’t need to be flown across the world or sprayed with chemicals and wrapped in plastic to be show-stoppers. About the Community Orchard This workshop will be run from the Strawbale Building on the Community Orchard. This unique building is hand-built from bales of straw and weatherproofed with clay sourced on site. It’s also off-grid, being naturally insulated by a living roof, with solar panels and a log-burner. The Community Orchard is a garden maintained by Staa for educational purposes featuring a variety of mature fruit trees, many of them heritage varieties, and also includes a pond and a stream. St Ann’s Allotments are Grade II* Listed by Historic England, and designated an Area of Importance for Nature Conservation. It is the oldest and largest are of Victorian detached town gardens in the UK, with over 700-years of history, 500 gardens, and 32 miles of hedgerow. About Staa This event is organised by Staa, a small charity that manages a number of highly regarded projects across 30+ plots at St Ann's Allotments that provide community benefit and offer a wide variety of volunteering opportunities. An Evening with Tristan Gooley - Nottingham | Waterstones

An Evening with Tristan Gooley - Nottingham | Waterstones

Sep 23, 2025 (UTC+1)
Nottingham
Cultural Experiences
We are delighted to welcome Tristan Gooley to Waterstones Nottingham to celebrate the release of his new book, The Hidden Seasons . ' When we know what to look for and what it means, seasonal moments that were once hidden shine brightly.' In The Hidden Seasons , Tristan Gooley shows us how to read the clues that the sun, moon, stars, plants, fungi, animals, water and weather give us - but that we continually miss, because we don't know how and where to look. Spring is the time of wildflower signs, unique cloud shapes and curious animal behaviour. Summer is a time of coastal clues, astronomical extremes and secret grass patterns. Autumn is a time for reading leaves, deciphering scents and investigating fungi. And in winter, we learn to read snow, deepen our star knowledge and use rare methods to find clues in overlooked places, including indoors. As with Tristan Gooley's bestsellers The Walker's Guide , How to Read Water and How to Read a Tree , The Hidden Seasons inspires us to explore these signs for ourselves, giving us many rich insights into our turning year. Soon we will be able to anticipate and celebrate daily changes that few notice, however surprising they may be. And the seasons will never look, sound or smell the same again. Tristan will talk about his new book before an audience Q&A and book signing. Tristan Gooley is an award-winning and international bestselling author. Through his journeys, teaching and writing, he has pioneered a renaissance in the rare art of natural navigation. His previous title, How to Read a Tree , was a Sunday Times Bestseller and a Waterstones Non-Fiction Book of the Month pick, selling 100,000 copies across all formats. Readers are embracing his vision of the natural world in ever increasing numbers. When people hear the word ‘horror’, they might often think of violence, fear, and of women in peril. But the relationship between horror and women is far richer – and far more surprising – than many realise.  From the rise of the Gothic in the eighteenth century, women have been at the heart of the horror genre – not just as characters, but as creators. These chilling tales were often written by women, for women, and became a powerful space to explore their deepest fears, desires, and frustrations. Horror offered something radical: a genre that could challenge social norms, question power structures, and give voice to the unspoken. In this fast-paced, four-century journey through literary history, we’ll uncover how women have shaped the horror genre – transforming haunted houses, ghosts, vampires, and monsters into metaphors for real-life struggles. From Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein to Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House , from the forgotten women of Romantic poetry to the simmering rage in Jane Eyre , this talk examines how horror has become a vessel for feminist expression. Doors open at 7pm, talk starts at 7.30pm - come down early to grab a good seat! Follow us on IG @seedtalks Speaker Bio: Dr Joan Passey is a Senior Lecturer in English at the University of Bristol where she specialises in the gothic, horror, and folklore in literature and culture. She has a Masters from the University of Oxford and a PhD from the University of Exeter, both focusing on the gothic and the supernatural. She is a BBC/AHRC New Generation Thinker and regularly contributes to and presents for BBC Radio 3, and has spoken at Hay Festival and from the BBC Proms. She edits anthologies for the British Library Tales of the Weird series, with titles including Cornish Horrors: Tales from the Land's End, Our Haunted Shores: Tales from the Coasts of the British Isles, and Phantoms of Kernow: Tales from Haunted Cornwall. Her monograph, Cornish Gothic, 1830-1913 (University of Wales Press, 2023) was the first to define a Cornish Gothic tradition in the nineteenth century, and she co-edited Shirley Jackson's Dark Tales: Reconsidering the Short Fiction (Bloomsbury, 2024) with Robert Lloyd.
