Introduction to Perspective Drawing | The Bluecoat

Mar 16, 2025 (UTC+0)
Liverpool
Arts
Fine Art
Perspective for beginners, learn how to represent depth and three-dimensional objects on a flat surface through drawing skills. ***To avoid a non-refundable booking fee and pay by card, cheque or cash, please contact dot-art Services directly on 0345 017 6660*** Sunday 16th March, 11:30am - 4:30pm (£65 for 1-day course) Programme Introductions: I introduce myself to the class and ask a little about each of them and what they are doing creatively, and what they hope to learn. Introduction to Perspective: what it is, how it allows the artist to represent depth and three-dimensional objects on a flat surface. Types of Perspective - two: linear and tonal Introduction of terms: horizon line, vanishing points and perspective lines. Supported by annotated photographs and diagrams. Three types of Linear Perspective: One-point, two-point and three-point perspective. Each type to be covered separately with an exercise for the students which I will look as while they work and make suggestions where necessary. One Point Perspective: where all parallel lines converge at one point on the horizon. I demonstrate with annotated photos of buildings and explanatory diagrams. Exercise: Students to draw the view down a railway line or a street in one point perspective, showing horizon, vanishing point and perspective lines. Two point Perspective: where all perspective/ construction lines appear to converge at two different points on the horizon. I will demonstrate with annotated photos and preprepared diagrams. Also an explanation of how to divide objects which are in perspective such as a fence or row of houses. Exercise: Draw a house or building viewed from the corner in two-point perspective. I will support with an annotated photo and diagrams showing the stages in constructing the image. The students will then draw it themselves. Three-Point Perspective: where the perspective lines meet at three different points, the third of which is above the object. I demonstrate with photos - perhaps a skyscraper from ground level, or looking down from the top of a tall building. Explanation of 'worm's eye view' and 'bird's eye view'. Supported with predrawn diagrams. Exercise: Students to draw a (simplified) skyscraper or office building from ground level. Foreshortening: Explanation of the term, demonstrated by me. For example a person (myself) with their hand raised, palm open, next to their face - this shows their relative size. Then I put my arm out in front of me with my hand coming straight out towards the student. My arm is foreshortened and the hand appears bigger than the head as it is closer to the viewer. Advice: draw what you see, not what you think you see. Drawing circular objects in perspective: how to draw an ellipse and pitfalls to avoid. Demonstrated with diagrams and familiar objects eg mention the centre circle on a football pitch when viewed from the stand, a car wheel or a circular jar viewed from an angle on the table. Tonal perspective: an illusion where distant objects appear to be less distinct in outline and colour than those closer to the viewer. How to vary the strength of tones in a drawing using different pencils, varying the strength of lines, fading colour to distant objects. This part may be kept briefer than the others. Final tips: Suggested methods to improve drawing such as constructing with a ruler but rendering freehand to get an interesting line and avoid the look of an architectural drawing; always check progress both in a mirror and by turning the picture upside down. Final exercise: To collect everything covered in the class, students to draw a collection of different sized objects of simple shape which they will be asked to bring. Simple shapes such as boxes, jars of different sizes. Positioned so their eye level is somewhere in the middle of the objects. Draw out horizon, construction lines and vanishing points. Render objects in bolder lines. Tutor Richard Farrell Early in my career I was involved in producing working drawings to scale for construction projects which led to an interest in urban sketching and painting local architecture. I have also attended life drawing classes on and off for the last 30 years as I feel this is the best way to gain an understanding of form, proportion and perspective. This discipline can then be applied to any object when drawing. When drawing a figure or building, the object is rarely drawn ‘head-on’ as this would look too much like a technical drawing and lacks any mood and drama. So it is necessary to understand the rules of perspective to accurately depict any object, whether it is a skyscraper, a wheelie bin or a table-top radio (the principle is the same), within a composition and to give it mass and accurately depict its form. Dates Sunday 16th March, 11:30am - 4:30pm (£65 for 1-day course) Venue Bluecoat, School Lane, Liverpool, L1 3BX Situated in the centre of Liverpool, just behind Church Street, down Church Alley and in front of Liverpool ONE. You can enter the building via the front courtyard off School Lane, or through the garden at the back off College Lane. Nearest train station- Liverpool Central. Cost £65 Materials you must bring: Pencils - range such as HB, B, 2BEraserSharpenerPaper - preferably A3Fineliner or black pen/ biroRuler - 12 minimumCompassesObjects to draw - simple boxes or tube shapes such as cereal packet, jar, empty Pringles tube, small radio similar small boxesNotes There are a maximum of 15 places available on the course, so early booking is essential.
