Fresh Thursday // New Ways of Moving in the Counterworlds + Brian d'Souza | Cobalt Studios

May 15, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Sheffield
Concerts
Please note, the advertised start time is when our doors will open, generally music starts one hour after doors. Fresh Thursday is a unique regular event that showcases new music alongside a home-cooked meal. For more information about how this event works please read the info at the bottom of this event carefully. Thank you. If you have a dietary requirement you can indicate it by selecting one of the free add-ons when purchasing your ticket. Please note we are unable to offer refunds. You can click here to view our full refunds policy. - -- New Ways of Moving in the Counterworlds A vibrant collaboration between three artists drawing on spiritual jazz, deep listening, mercurial poetry and spontaneous improvisation, New Ways of Moving in the Counterworlds brings together the nimble violin-and-bass duo of John Garner and John Pope with the gracefully probing text of poet and author Nisha Ramayya. Exploring and celebrating the music of shared influences from Alice Coltrane and Fred Moten to Ahmad Jamal and Don Cherry, these three creators seek to bring their audience into a world charged with the thought-provoking, life-affirming potential of art and dreaming. Garner and Pope’s long-standing partnership, built on years of playing and improvising together, serves as a flexible and dynamic setting for Ramayya’s sensuous poetry, which she performs, de-constructs and re-examines in the eruptive moment of performance. Formed in 2024 to perform at Newcastle’s esteemed Masala Festival, New Ways of Moving in the Counterworldsis an exuberant and timely celebration of connectedness, an artistic riposte of imperial narratives and a powerful hymn to love and resilience. --- Brian d'Souza Brian d'Souza, also known as DJ Auntie Flo, has been experimenting with making music from plants and fungi for the past five years under the new alias 'Plants Can Dance (and Mushrooms Sing)'. He uses the plant biodata to trigger notes on his specially built modular synthesizer in a process called bionsonification, with the intention of bridging the gap between the natural world and electronic music realm. He currently runs the A State Of Flo label and substack, focusing on the biological basis for music, new ecosystems and the creation of acoustic ecologies. As Auntie Flo, he recently released his fourth album 'In My Dreams (I'm A Bird And I'm Free)' which included the hit single 'Green City' - the follow up to the acclaimed 'Radio Highlife' released with Gilles Peterson's Brownswood. His nature based music has been featured on the BBC, 6Music, V&A, Discovery Channel, Tate, Glastonbury, National Trust and more. Read more --- More about FRESH Thursdays... FRESH happens every Thursday during our open seasons. It is a platform to bring you fresh new music served up alongside a homecooked plant based meal, board games and candles. It can be hard to get people out to hear music that they don’t know yet & this is why we decided to offer dinner as an incentive to try something new, these gigs are cosy, communal nights and often you get to hear completely new music for the very first time. The music varies across multiple genres but it is usually fairly gentle listening type music & well suited to a relaxed Thursday night. The gigs are seated and during the sets the audience is very music focused & quiet with time to chat in between the sets and at the end when we keep the bar open. We cook the food from scratch usually and dinner is well suited to lover of vegetables and wholesome cooking, it's usually something like a dhal, veggie chilli, tacos, roast veg or similar, our base line is vegan sometimes with veggie options. We can cater for nut/gluten free meals, but nuts & gluten are used in the kitchen so if you have serious allergies please bear that in mind. Doors at 7pm, we aim to get dinner ready by 8pm and will bring it to you when its ready… music usually starts around 8pm, sometimes later if it’s a busy night for food (we are a tiny team) and we aim to have the music finished by 10-10.15 pm. We can only guarantee dinner with advance tickets and these days we cap dinner at 60 meals and the food tickets do often sell out. We hope/think it's obvious that quality music and dinner for £10 is all about culture & community and that these events cost us money… If you can afford to purchase a higher level ‘Cobalt supporters‘ ticket we appreciate the additional help towards costs very much. An Evening with Heather Critchlow & Dominic Nolan - St Albans | Waterstones

May 15, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
St Albans
Arts
We are delighted to have Heather Critchlow and Dominic Nolan instore to chat about their new books The Tomorrow Project and White City . The Tomorrow Project : The unmissable new speculative novel for fans of Station Eleven , The End We Start From and The Last of Us .When the end comes, what will you wish you had done? In 2050s London, fear grips like a vice as a deadly virus sweeps the globe. The British prime minister tells her people to remain calm. A vaccine will be available soon, and as a precautionary measure children will be whisked away to undisclosed locations, kept safe until the storm passes. Marianne, Downing Street press secretary, doesn’t realise the futility until it is far, far too late. When the truth hits her, Marianne is forced to choose: stay with her family, or do whatever she can to help the doomed survive. As London falls, seven-year-old Maia is one of the last to escape the city. In an evacuation camp, she binds herself to Finn: in the absence of everything she knew, he becomes her everything. Yet as the years roll on and hope fades, Maia sees the bubble of safety is also a prison. She realises there is only one choice: to leave the camp and find what remains on the outside. White City : It's 1952, and London is victorious but broken, a city of war ruins and rationing, run by gangsters and black-market spivs. An elaborate midnight heist, the biggest robbery in British history, sends newspapers into a frenzy. Politicians are furious, the police red-faced. They have suspicions but no leads. Hunches but no proof. For two families, it is more than just a sensational headline, as their fathers fail to return home on the day of the robbery. Young Addie Rowe, daughter of a missing Jamaican postman and drunk ex-club hostess mother, struggles to care for her little sister in a dilapidated Brixton rooming house. Claire Martin, increasingly resentful of roads not taken, strives to make the rent and keep her teenage son Ray from falling under unsavoury influences in Notting Dale. She finds herself caught between the interests of dangerous men who may know the truth behind her husband's disappearance: Dave Lander, whose reserved nature she finds difficult to reconcile with his reputation as a violent gang enforcer, and Teddy 'Mother' Nunn, a sociopathic, evangelising outlaw and top lieutenant in Billy Hill's underworld. Drawn together through the years in the city's invisible web of crime and poverty, the fates of the broken families and violent men collide in 1958, as the West Indian community of Notting Hill's slums come under attack from thugs and Teddy Boys. For Addie, Claire, Dave and Mother, old scores will be settled and new dreams chased in the crucible of London's violent summer. We hope to see you there! Talk: Arts Crafts to Art Deco-Women Artists & the Sheffield Silver Industry | Millennium Gallery

May 16, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Sheffield
Arts
Craft
From 1888 through to the 1930s, there were remarkable waves of developments in the applied arts – Arts & Crafts, Art Nouveau and Art Deco. These movements came after a sustained period of public investment in art and design education which saw an astonishing growth in the number of talented and well-trained artist-designers – many of whom were women. These women who contributed to the new waves of design often received little credit during their lifetimes and are not widely known today.  Today, Sheffield is known as “Steel City”, but at the start of the 20th century it was also “Silver City”, home to many highly respected firms producing silverware and cutlery.   In this talk, Steve will explore the key characteristics of the Arts & Crafts, Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements, whilst highlighting many of the women designers linked to Sheffield. You’ll also find out more about the development of art schools and the growth in demand for art training that fuelled these movements.  Please donate if you're able and help keep your museums open and available for everyone to enjoy. Suggested donation £5 – when you select your tickets, please scroll down and select ‘General Admission + Donation’.   Information Source: Sheffield Museums | eventbrite

Understanding Karma: Creating Your Own Destiny | Manor Barn

Canterbury
Cultural Experiences
When we find ourselves immersed in problems, we often ask: Why me? But do we have an answer to that question? Do we feel unlucky? Do we feel that we have been dealt an unfair hand? Buddha’s teachings on the law of karma gives us a clear and practical explanation on why things happen the way they do, and how we can begin to change our experiences from not so great to fantastic. Or at the very least, better. Rather than seeking happiness, we learn to create it. Rather than running from unhappiness, we learn to abandon its causes. Understanding karma puts us in the driver’s seat of our own life. In this course, Buddhist Nun Kelsang Oden will explore how by using the law of karma we can change our experience of the present, heal the past, and create a more fortunate future. Venue : The Manor Barn, Cockering Road, Canterbury, CT1 3UR Date : Saturday 17 May 2025 Time : 10am - 1pm Price : £25 | £20 low income concession | Monthly membership - free Email info@meditateinkent.com if you have financial restrictions to see if we can help Schedule Registration: 09.40am Session one - 10.00am - 11.15am Break - 11.15am - 11.45am Session two - 11.45am - 1.00pm Everyone Welcome! meditateinkent.com Information Source: Kadampa Meditation Centre Kent | eventbrite

May Text Book Club: Wild Atlantic Women by Grainne Lyons | 1 Holywell Hill

May 18, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
St Albans
Cultural Experiences
For May, our booksellers were set the task of choosing a book with the theme of travel. After considering a wide range of fantastic titles, we have decided on the newly published Wild Atlantic Women by Grainne Lyons. The book club will be held upstairs in our reading rooms and are suitable for ages 18+ years. About the book- At a crossroads in her life, Gráinne Lyons set out to travel Ireland’s west coast on foot. She set a simple intention: to walk in the footsteps of eleven pioneering Irish women deeply rooted in this coastal landscape and explore their lives and work along the way. As a Londoner born to Irish parents, she also sought answers in her own identity. As Gráinne heads north from Cape Clear Island where her great-grandmother was a lacemaker, she considers Ellen Hutchins, Maude Delap, Edna O’Brien, Granuaile and Queen Maeve among others from her unique perspective. Their homes – in places that are famously wild and remote – are transformed into sites of hope, purpose, opportunity and inspiration. Walking through this history, her journey reveals unexpected insight into emigrant identity, travelling alone, femininity and the trappings of an ‘ideal’ life. Against the backdrop and power of this great ocean, Wild Atlantic Women will inspire the twenty-first-century reader and walker to keep going, regardless of the path.
